First Week's Quiz - A Review

To recap what will be on tomorrow's quiz and where to find some resources to help you:

1. Scientific Method - be able to identify parts of an experiment like the control and experimental groups, independent and dependent variables, and constants. Some points to help you:

  • The independent variable is the variable that you change or manipulate.
  • The dependent variable is what you are measuring and changes as a result of the independent variable(that thing you changed)
  • Generally, when you set up an experiment you want to have a control group and an experimental group
    • The control group is not exposed to the independent variable and is used to compare results of the experiment.
    • The experimental group is exposed to the independent variable (basically it's the group that is the experiment you are testing).
    • Constants are parts of the experiment that you want to make sure stay exactly the same in both the experimental and control groups - which is reality is every part of the experiment(s) other than the independent variable. Click here for extra practice

2. Prefixes/Suffixes of Scientific Vocabulary - check here for the list.

3. Basic Lab Safety - here are the rules and here are some practice questions. Also, please remember to turn in the safety contract tomorrow!

4. Be familiar with the characteristics of life. What does it mean to be alive? That ubiquitous and ephemeral thing...

Hope this helps!
